Sept 20-23


It is hard to believe that we are already coming up to the end of September.  It has been a busy and exciting start to the school year.  Here are some of the things we have worked on this week.

We were so excited to begin our week with a presentation from Earth Rangers.  This is a not for profit group that involves young people in conservation and environmental stewardship.  Students had a chance to see some animals, learn about how they survive and thrive, and learn about what kinds of things are impacting their habitats.  If your child is interested in becoming an Earth Ranger, you can follow the links below for more information.

If your child becomes an Earth Ranger, they can use the code “beluga” to get a bonus virtual hoodie for their character and the code "lynx" for 25 extra points because they participated in the virtual event at school.


Science - As Tuesday was the last day of summer, we decided to take advantage of our beautiful weather to continue our work with bugs.  We again went out to see if we could carefully capture and examine some live specimens.  Students were so excited to share what they found.  We also looked at preserved specimens in the class and worked to create a scientific sketch in our visual journals.  We talked about how drawing as a scientist is different from drawing like an artist.  We worked on adding detail to our drawing and labeling the things that we saw.



Social Studies - This week was focused on the Terry Fox run.  We watched some videos and read some stories about Terry Fox and talked about the importance of helping others.  People who are sick or who haved died of cancer was a weighty subject to discuss and some students expressed that it made them sad to think about it.  I acknowledged those feelings and we were able to talk about those feelings in terms of feeling empathy for others.  We talked about how understanding how other people feel helps us to be better friends and supportive members of our community.  Students did some work in their visual journals to show their understanding of the Terry Fox run and everyone was so excited to participate in our run on Wednesday.  Many thanks to everyone for donating for our run.  If you did not get a chance to contribute, you can still do an on-line donation.


Math - This week included using our skip counting by 2’s to help us count our Toonies that we collected for Terry Fox.  We practiced counting by 2 using a chant to help us remember the pattern of the numbers. 


Gym - Students were taught how to play 4 square on our compound.



Our Google Classroom is now up and running.  Together students and I will work with the comupters this Wednesday to explore google classroom and jamboards. I have put in the links for some of our most popular literacy and math sites.  I will be using the digital classroom to assign activities for students to practice their literacy skills and to develop their independence with technology.  This will also be a place where I will share exemplars and rubrics for writing projects.  Shortly, I will post a short video of all of our classmates introducing themselves that I am sure that all of you will love.

What an exciting short week we have had.  Between Valentine’s Day and Carnaval, we have been so busy.  Here are the highlights: Students were so excited to exchange cards and gifts with their friends on Monday.  We also worked on making paper hearts and using them to create animals and pictures.  I was amazed at everyone’s creativity. I hope you enjoyed the picture that they brought home. We also had our kick off to Carnaval on Monday.  Students created an effigy of Bonhomme and this has now been attached to their jackets to show that they are participating in our event. Our week has been full of learning through exploration and observation.  Here are some of the highlights of our week: Our work on the Maratimes continued this week.  We watched a number of videos about the area and students had an opportunity to look at the landscapes, animals, and symbols that represent this part of our country.   We began a new read aloud story this week by Lois Lowry called “Gooney Bird Greene”.  This novel is about a grade two student with a talent for storytelling.  Students have been listening to a chapter each day and have been developing their understanding of character, plot, and dialogue.  We have also been listening to the author’s use of rich vocabulary.   In Science, students have completed the exploration of magnets through the independent stations provided.  Students had to work as a group to read instructions, do the activity, and record their observations and what they learned.  Applying scientific ...

This week we have really settled into our routine and have extended our learning in new and interesting ways.  Here are some of the things we have worked on: In Language Arts, we have been continuing our writing of own versions of “The Mitten” using arctic animals.  Students have been working on using interesting words to describe how each animal moves and what happens when they one by one try to snuggle up in this new warm place. We continued to learn about styles of Hip Hop dance this week with the help of Mr. J. from Sound Kreations.  Students have been so engaged and enthusiastic in this exciting work.  We have one more week with Mr. J. and we will then perform a dance piece that we are putting together.  Due to covid, we are unable to have an audience for this, so each class will be recorded and a school-wide performance video will be created so that we can see everybody’s dance moves.
