Oct 12-15
Our week just flew by. We were so busy with a variety of learning activities and projects. Here are some of our highlights for the week:
In Math, we worked to extend our counting and skip counting skills. We also practiced how to write and recognize the numbers from 1 to 100. In grade one, teachers often see numbers written in reverse, but in grade two, we are practicing to ensure that our numerals are written correctly and that we are not reversing our digits. Grade one’s practiced writing numbers to 100 by 1’s and grade twos practiced writing the sequences for skip counting by 10’s, 5’s, and 2’s.
In Social Studies, we have been investigating two types of communities; Urban and Rural. We have read a number of stories set in different places and have identifies some of the things commonly found in each kind of community. We demonstrated our understanding through working together to create a mural of the two types of communities.
We started learning about healthy foods this week. Students learned about the 3 main groups that are highlighted in the Canada Food Guide. We worked on what different types of food provide to our bodies. Students learned about the importance of vitamins and minerals that they get from fruits and vegetables. We also learned about how calcium helps our bones and teeth grow and how protein from meat and alternatives helps our muscles be strong. There is an interactive game found in the google classroom that reinforces this learning. Students worked together in table groups to play that game and are welcome to show it to you at home.
In addition to learning about healthy food, we also learned about people who might not have enough food to eat. We read a great book called “Maddi’s Fridge” about a girl who finds out that her friend has nothing in her fridge but a little bit of milk. It is a very kid-friendly way to talk about this issue of hunger and food insecurity. You can find the read aloud here. Students then created an art piece to show what healthy things they would buy for Maddi’s family. They had to decide if they would belong in Maddi’s Fridge or Maddi’s Cupboard. We used markers and watercolour pencils to create these artistic works.
