This week we again enjoyed taking our learning outside.  We are taking advantage of our beautiful fall weather while we can.  Here are some highlights from the week:

Monday’s trip to the coulee was full of wonderful learning opportunities. Students used natural object to represent their understanding of math patterns.  We were delighted to spend some time with our elder, Saa’kokoto.  He shared with us the importance of of Na’a (mother earth) and talked about how she uses colour in the world around us to create beauty.  He aslo told us a story about a bear ( gee-eye-you) and a fox (Si-no-baa). We also met with our artist for the year, Karen.  She gave us some natural materials and had us experiment with creating some “Na’a Art”.  We will be working with her throughout the year to use the beautiful materials that Na’a provides to create visual images.  We were excited to begin this work.


 

 


As this week is the lead up to Hallowe’en, we decided to do some work with pumpkins.  We had 4 pumpkins in our class this week and students had to do some Math and Science work to make some estimates about their pumpkin and then to measure and see if their predictions were accurate.  We used our blocks to measure how tall they were, what their diameters were, and how big around they were.  We made some guesses about which pumpkin would be heaviest and which would be lightest.  Finally, we tried to decide which one we thought would have the most seeds.




Emptying out the pumpkins and separating out the seeds was a real event!  We used this as a great exercise in developing some interesting vocabulary that will help us in our writing.


 


We did two different types of drawings of our pumpkins.  We worked on a detailed scientific drawing which included labels and drew from two different perspectives.  


We then worked on an artistic drawing of our pumpkins.  This included choosing one view of the pumpkin with a focus on blending colours and adding variation in colour and using color blending to give a sense of light and shadow to our artwork.


 

Of course, the students were thrilled to share their family made pumpkins and their costumes with their friends on Friday.  We did some drawing and writing about who or what their costumes were.  We wish everyone a spooky, safe, and fun Halloween!


As October comes to an end, we are looking into November and beginning to prepare for our Remembrance Day ceremony.  Students in Room 150 will be singing a song “Light a Candle for Peace”.  We started to learn this song this week and the lyrics and a link has been posted in the google classroom.  Please help your child practice over the weekend as we will be recording it next week so that we have the video ready to share with everyone by the 10th. As well, if you have any electric tea lights at home, with a white base and yellow/white light we would appreciate you sending it in on Monday for your child to use in our video.

What an exciting short week we have had.  Between Valentine’s Day and Carnaval, we have been so busy.  Here are the highlights: Students were so excited to exchange cards and gifts with their friends on Monday.  We also worked on making paper hearts and using them to create animals and pictures.  I was amazed at everyone’s creativity. I hope you enjoyed the picture that they brought home. We also had our kick off to Carnaval on Monday.  Students created an effigy of Bonhomme and this has now been attached to their jackets to show that they are participating in our event. Our week has been full of learning through exploration and observation.  Here are some of the highlights of our week: Our work on the Maratimes continued this week.  We watched a number of videos about the area and students had an opportunity to look at the landscapes, animals, and symbols that represent this part of our country.   We began a new read aloud story this week by Lois Lowry called “Gooney Bird Greene”.  This novel is about a grade two student with a talent for storytelling.  Students have been listening to a chapter each day and have been developing their understanding of character, plot, and dialogue.  We have also been listening to the author’s use of rich vocabulary.   In Science, students have completed the exploration of magnets through the independent stations provided.  Students had to work as a group to read instructions, do the activity, and record their observations and what they learned.  Applying scientific ...

This week we have really settled into our routine and have extended our learning in new and interesting ways.  Here are some of the things we have worked on: In Language Arts, we have been continuing our writing of own versions of “The Mitten” using arctic animals.  Students have been working on using interesting words to describe how each animal moves and what happens when they one by one try to snuggle up in this new warm place. We continued to learn about styles of Hip Hop dance this week with the help of Mr. J. from Sound Kreations.  Students have been so engaged and enthusiastic in this exciting work.  We have one more week with Mr. J. and we will then perform a dance piece that we are putting together.  Due to covid, we are unable to have an audience for this, so each class will be recorded and a school-wide performance video will be created so that we can see everybody’s dance moves.
