 It was a glorious week of learning both inside and outside of our school building.  Here are some of the things we were busy with this week:

Many thanks to the volunteer who helped us make our first trip to Twelve Mile coulee.  The students were so excited to explore our natural environment.  We did some work on using our senses to explore our environment.  We also took the opportunity to explore some small crawling and flying residents of the coulee using our bug pooters and isolation chambers.  Students were fascinated by the bugs they found and observed some spiders and many worms. We enjoyed the glorious colours of the forest area at this time of year matching paint chip colours to the natural world and finally we shared a story called “When We Were Alone” which is a great, age appropriate, book about residential schools.  Follow this link to hear the story read by the author. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv6uX0a91dM





Following our coulee trip we wrote a reflective journal entry about our favourite part of the trip. Together we discussed what a made a good picture to share our thinking and then what made good writing. For grade 1's that is using some letters to label the pictures and then attempting a single simple sentence, for grade 2's that includes a more detailed picture and a minimum of 3 sentences. This rubric will also be posted in google classroom for a closer look.




In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, we did some special work around Orange Shirt Day and how we can demonstrate appreciation for the First Nations culture and people who share our community.


Students also went into the google classroom to explore using jamboard as a literacy centre. They can show you how this works and what types of skills and activities they can do independently.


We continued to play mancala on Friday, and students have begun to recognize ways to stop their opponent from capturing lots of stones or finding ways to have multiple turns in a row. This demonstrates great mathmatical thinking skills which includes estimating, counting and predicting. I also enjoy hearing the great conversations that are occuring while the stuents play together.


Next week we will be exploring colour and art through the changing of the seasons.  We would like you to do some homework this weekend to support our work.  Students are asked to go on a leaf hunt.  We would like each student to bring in a small ziploc bag of a variety of leaves that are soft and not crunchy.  We are looking for leaves of different sizes, shapes and colours so that we can incorporate some math outcomes such as sorting, organizing, and comparing attributes.  We look forward to seeing everyone’s collections.

What an exciting short week we have had.  Between Valentine’s Day and Carnaval, we have been so busy.  Here are the highlights: Students were so excited to exchange cards and gifts with their friends on Monday.  We also worked on making paper hearts and using them to create animals and pictures.  I was amazed at everyone’s creativity. I hope you enjoyed the picture that they brought home. We also had our kick off to Carnaval on Monday.  Students created an effigy of Bonhomme and this has now been attached to their jackets to show that they are participating in our event. Our week has been full of learning through exploration and observation.  Here are some of the highlights of our week: Our work on the Maratimes continued this week.  We watched a number of videos about the area and students had an opportunity to look at the landscapes, animals, and symbols that represent this part of our country.   We began a new read aloud story this week by Lois Lowry called “Gooney Bird Greene”.  This novel is about a grade two student with a talent for storytelling.  Students have been listening to a chapter each day and have been developing their understanding of character, plot, and dialogue.  We have also been listening to the author’s use of rich vocabulary.   In Science, students have completed the exploration of magnets through the independent stations provided.  Students had to work as a group to read instructions, do the activity, and record their observations and what they learned.  Applying scientific ...

This week we have really settled into our routine and have extended our learning in new and interesting ways.  Here are some of the things we have worked on: In Language Arts, we have been continuing our writing of own versions of “The Mitten” using arctic animals.  Students have been working on using interesting words to describe how each animal moves and what happens when they one by one try to snuggle up in this new warm place. We continued to learn about styles of Hip Hop dance this week with the help of Mr. J. from Sound Kreations.  Students have been so engaged and enthusiastic in this exciting work.  We have one more week with Mr. J. and we will then perform a dance piece that we are putting together.  Due to covid, we are unable to have an audience for this, so each class will be recorded and a school-wide performance video will be created so that we can see everybody’s dance moves.
