Nov 1-5

We spent this week transitioning from the spooky end of October to the new month of November.  Of course, all of the students couldn’t wait to share their stories about their Halloween activities.  Here are some of the other things we learned this week:

In Math we have been working on organizing and sorting objects.  We did this last month with our leaves and this week we worked with buttons.  The Grade 1's are learning to sort the same group of objects using different attributes such as colour, size, number of holes, shape, etc.  Grade 2's are working on creating groups based on two attributes - ex. Large red buttons, small red buttons, etc. We also created a complex pattern using 1-3 elements for Grade 1's and 3-5 elements for the Grade 2's.



In gym, we have wrapped up our indoor work with scooters and our outdoor work with 4 square.  We began using scoops and balls in the gym which is a great way to develop hand eye coordination.  For outdoor activities, we are working on team based cooperative games.  Our focus will be how to encourage our team members and also the other team.  We also will be working to make sure that we are having fun with the games and are not just focussed on who wins and who loses.  Good sportsmanship makes games fun for everyone.



As Remembrance Day is drawing near, our Social Studies and Art work has been connected.  We have been reading stories about peace and about war.  We made poppies by blending the warm colours of pink, red and orange using Mr. Sketch markers on a coffee filter.  These poppies then became part of the wreath that will be used by our class for the virtual assembly.  We also used white glue and oil pastels on black paper to create candle art to go along with our song that we have been practicing.


A big highlight of the week was our visit with author, Lois Brandt.  It was so inspiring to hear that she struggled to learn to read and write as a child and she is now a professional author.  Her talk about her craft and her passion for helping others was a powerful message for our students.  Many thanks to everyone who is supporting our Veteran’s Food Bank Drive

What an exciting short week we have had.  Between Valentine’s Day and Carnaval, we have been so busy.  Here are the highlights: Students were so excited to exchange cards and gifts with their friends on Monday.  We also worked on making paper hearts and using them to create animals and pictures.  I was amazed at everyone’s creativity. I hope you enjoyed the picture that they brought home. We also had our kick off to Carnaval on Monday.  Students created an effigy of Bonhomme and this has now been attached to their jackets to show that they are participating in our event. Our week has been full of learning through exploration and observation.  Here are some of the highlights of our week: Our work on the Maratimes continued this week.  We watched a number of videos about the area and students had an opportunity to look at the landscapes, animals, and symbols that represent this part of our country.   We began a new read aloud story this week by Lois Lowry called “Gooney Bird Greene”.  This novel is about a grade two student with a talent for storytelling.  Students have been listening to a chapter each day and have been developing their understanding of character, plot, and dialogue.  We have also been listening to the author’s use of rich vocabulary.   In Science, students have completed the exploration of magnets through the independent stations provided.  Students had to work as a group to read instructions, do the activity, and record their observations and what they learned.  Applying scientific ...

This week we have really settled into our routine and have extended our learning in new and interesting ways.  Here are some of the things we have worked on: In Language Arts, we have been continuing our writing of own versions of “The Mitten” using arctic animals.  Students have been working on using interesting words to describe how each animal moves and what happens when they one by one try to snuggle up in this new warm place. We continued to learn about styles of Hip Hop dance this week with the help of Mr. J. from Sound Kreations.  Students have been so engaged and enthusiastic in this exciting work.  We have one more week with Mr. J. and we will then perform a dance piece that we are putting together.  Due to covid, we are unable to have an audience for this, so each class will be recorded and a school-wide performance video will be created so that we can see everybody’s dance moves.
