 Our short week has been a busy one.  Here are some of the highlights of our learning:

With our poppy art and discussions of Remembrance Day, we had some conversations about the use of symbols as a way for people to represent ideas and feelings.  We talked about how using symbols helps us recognize things quickly and to help us feel like we belong. We read The Enemy A Book about Peace and Feathers and Fools.


We went on to explore the symbols and logos that we see frequently in the world around us.  We learned that many companies and teams use logos as a way for people to recognize their stores or products.  We had a look at some of the colours and symbols that teams or companies use to remind us of something else or to make us feel a particular emotion.  We then brainstormed things that are important to us and what pictures, words or symbols we could use to represent our class.  Our class is in the process of choosing a “team name” and coming up with a final design for our class logo.  We would like to use this logo in a number of ways in the coming weeks and months to create a sense of belonging.


In Math this week, we used different materials to look again at how to sort and organize things into groups based on similar attributes.  This week students used a variety of shaped plastic blocks or they had a collection of various colours and types of toy bugs that they needed to sort into groups.  Students in Grade one could sort by a single attribute, students in Grade two had to use two attributes.  I continue to be impressed with the mathematical thinking that these activities with manipulatives generate.


In writing this week, we introduced a checklist for students to use to see if they have included important elements in their work.  All students are working to add detail to their written work.  In grade one, students are working on adding additional sentences that support the detail that they included in their picture.  Grade two students are working on focussing their writing on one event and adding interesting and important details.  They are also working on creating more complex sentences using descriptive words and joining words such as because, and , or but.

What an exciting short week we have had.  Between Valentine’s Day and Carnaval, we have been so busy.  Here are the highlights: Students were so excited to exchange cards and gifts with their friends on Monday.  We also worked on making paper hearts and using them to create animals and pictures.  I was amazed at everyone’s creativity. I hope you enjoyed the picture that they brought home. We also had our kick off to Carnaval on Monday.  Students created an effigy of Bonhomme and this has now been attached to their jackets to show that they are participating in our event. Our week has been full of learning through exploration and observation.  Here are some of the highlights of our week: Our work on the Maratimes continued this week.  We watched a number of videos about the area and students had an opportunity to look at the landscapes, animals, and symbols that represent this part of our country.   We began a new read aloud story this week by Lois Lowry called “Gooney Bird Greene”.  This novel is about a grade two student with a talent for storytelling.  Students have been listening to a chapter each day and have been developing their understanding of character, plot, and dialogue.  We have also been listening to the author’s use of rich vocabulary.   In Science, students have completed the exploration of magnets through the independent stations provided.  Students had to work as a group to read instructions, do the activity, and record their observations and what they learned.  Applying scientific ...

This week we have really settled into our routine and have extended our learning in new and interesting ways.  Here are some of the things we have worked on: In Language Arts, we have been continuing our writing of own versions of “The Mitten” using arctic animals.  Students have been working on using interesting words to describe how each animal moves and what happens when they one by one try to snuggle up in this new warm place. We continued to learn about styles of Hip Hop dance this week with the help of Mr. J. from Sound Kreations.  Students have been so engaged and enthusiastic in this exciting work.  We have one more week with Mr. J. and we will then perform a dance piece that we are putting together.  Due to covid, we are unable to have an audience for this, so each class will be recorded and a school-wide performance video will be created so that we can see everybody’s dance moves.
